Welcome to Happy Space®

I believe that everyone deserves a chance to make their richest contributions. Unfortunately, modern work culture can often invite marginalized groups to burn out or opt out...neither of which option feels just.

Happy Space is about exploring the intersection of productivity & inclusivity from the perspective of design. If we can design inclusive performance, we'll spark the reciprocity of giving and receiving, leading to wildly fulfilling lives for all involved.

Inclusivity must expand to address the neurodivergent mind, invisible disabilities, sensitivity, temperament, and caregiving responsibilities.

Check out the podcast, events, and programs all about working towards everyone having a Happy Space.

Being a highly sensitive person myself, I have taken a particular interest in building awareness of the trait. Did you know that the trait of high sensitivity appears in 1 in 5 people?  If it is not you, it is a family member, friend, colleague, or member of your community.

It is my goal to inspire a more tender world where all of us can make our richest contributions, HSPs included.

Events

Every month - on the second Monday (except for October and December when it will be the third Monday) I host an open Zoom call from noon - 1 pm Eastern Time to explore a topic related to designing inclusive performance.

Taking a cue from a burning news story we'll explore the issues from a variety of prespectives: employee experience & culture, product, service, & workspace design, inclusivity & performance to name a few.

Sign up for the Happy Space Hot Topics list and you'll be sent the Zoom Link and reminders for each call. Please note that the Zoom room size is limited so join early to be sure of a spot. See you there!

you never know when life is going to insert a chal you never know when life is going to insert a challenge.

thankfully the car took the blow and that can be figured out.

met some lovely people (uber driver, tow truck drivers, insurance customer service and 911 call operator)

it could have been aggravating but better to look for the unexpected opportunities. and maybe i avoided being in an even worse accident.

happy to lay low for a few days
has anyone ever asked you how you work best? do yo has anyone ever asked you how you work best?
do you know what your staff needs to succeed?

with all this tension around the "return to office" (RTO),
one thing is clear: nuance is necessary

as exemplified by the tentative agreement reached with
the Public Service Alliance Workers in Canada,
a manager needs to look at each case individually
while keeping team needs in mind.

only this will lead to true inclusivity and reaping
the rewards of a diverse talent pool.

ADHD advocate, entrepreneur, and author, Peter Sha ADHD advocate, entrepreneur, and author, Peter Shankman joined me on the Happy Space Podcast and shared these wise words:

🚗"The easiest way to put it is to imagine you're driving a Honda Accord for the first 15 years of your life, and then all of a sudden someone tells you, you know, “Hey, you've had enough of that Accord.

🏎 ’Here's a Lamborghini’”. If you try to drive that Lamborghini the same way you're driving the Honda Accord, you're going to rev up to go on the highway and you're going to go 200 miles an hour and you're going to crash into a tree and destroy the car. But if you know how to use that faster car, you know how to drive that faster Lamborghini, you can do things that people with regular cars cannot do.

🌹And that is sort of the beauty of neurodivergence is that once you understand your talents and you understand where your skills lie, and more importantly, you understand how to access those skills while dismissing the parts that aren't good for you, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

🧠It's no coincidence that without being diagnosed with ADHD, I was able to start and sell three companies. when I finally got diagnosed, everything started making a lot more sense, and I was able to even improve on that. But a lot of it comes from the fact that we spend, most people who are neurodivergent have spent a good portion of their lives being told they're broken, being told they don't fit in, and being told the things they do are not appropriate.

🤝🏼And that's really what I'm trying to help prevent and stop. But you know, if you're a company, you're a business and you're not paying attention to hiring the neurodivergent, catering to the neurodivergent, selling to the neurodivergent, making it a better place for the neurodivergent to work you are severely limiting what your company can do."

Learning more about the variety of neurodivergent conditions and temperaments (I include high sensitivity here) can help us hold onto compassion and respect when dealing with colleagues, customers, and community.

🎙these are powerful words from speaker, author, and successful entrepreneur @petershankman in our conversation on the latest episode of the “Happy Space Podcast”- all about designing inclusive performance. please consider them an invitation to get curious about what more you & your organization could do to be more inclusive of the neurodivergent.

Peter shares

✔ what has made him successful living with ADHD

👩🏼‍⚕️ thoughts about the value of a diagnosis

💊 how medication fits into his toolkit

🧠how organizations should think about the neurodivergent

We also explore sensitivity and organization, two subjects I’m very familiar with as a highly sensitive person who has helped clients organize their spaces and schedules. Sensitivity seems to be a throughline in neurodivergent ways of being and is well worth better understanding.

📕Peter’s most recent book is “The Boy With the Faster Brain”, a book with delightful drawings to empower kids with ADHD. A young boy seeks help to uncover more about how his brain works and how to get the most out of it. It is an ideal gift for someone beginning this journey.

for Alex and Lizzie, Workstyle involves not only e for Alex and Lizzie, Workstyle involves not only eight years of practical experience, but also four years of research into the people who are working to respect their own preferences. this proved a link between autonomy and productivity: greater autonomy increases your well-being and therefore your productivity.

organizations that don't evolve will find they are missing out on a source of competitive advantage. it's something that Alex and Lizzie feel really strongly about: your ways of working are something that creates a competitive advantage.

this evolution should be squarely in the CEO's line of sight because it can fundamentally shape who you have in your organization, how you retain them, how you bring people together, how you leverage diversity, and that leads to better outcomes.

does your place of employment allow you to design your own workstyle?

i love travelling and there are often sensory chal i love travelling and there are often sensory challenges to figure out.

here are two:

light - i noticed right away that the bulbs in the lamps in my room were “cold white”. i still consider 3000K too cold and prefer 2700K which is what many of our incandescent bulbs emitted.

i spoke with the front desk and went for a walk hoping to source some bulbs just in case they couldn’t change them.

cold white lights can trigger a migraine for me and being here to give a keynote, i want to feel my best, so solving this was critical for me.

sound - check out this hairdryer. 85 dB can cause hearing damage and dB increase exponentially not linearly. 94 dB is simply unacceptable - especially for a tool you use right beside your ears.

what challenges have you noticed when you’re travelling? and what do you do about them?

not sure if anything can be done about the hairdryer so glad i have a short cut! but i will let the hotel know.

awareness is the first step.
