Holiday Organizing

Etiquette for Your Next Office Holiday Party

multi-racial group at party drinking champagne

You’ve probably seen a few faux pas at work holiday events, but office celebrations are an incredible opportunity to put your best foot forward and connect with a broader circle of colleagues than normal. Here’s how to make the most of the party and make sure you’re remembered for the right reasons this season.

WHAT TO DO…

  1. Set an intention for the event. Who would you like to meet? What do you want them to remember about you? Being thoughtful about what you’d like the outcome of the party (or any meeting) to be sets you up for success.
  2. Get to know your colleagues better. This is a time to relax and talk about more than work. Inquire about hobbies, an upcoming vacation, favourite foods or music. You might find you have more in common than you think.
  3. Make a positive lasting impression. Dress well and in a colour that complements you and makes you feel fantastic. Clothes can make an easy entry point for conversation.
  4. Stand up for your colleagues if there is any even mildly negative behavior such as bullying or harassment.
  5. If you see that someone has drunk too much, offer water and to arrange a ride home.

WHAT NOT TO DO!

  1. Feel pressured or pressure others to consume alcohol or eat all the sweets. Indulge responsibly. There may be someone in your circle who is trying to avoid these things. Make it easy for them!
  2. Don’t tell off-colour jokes which may be offensive.
  3. Avoid getting deep into a work conversation. This is not the time or place.
  4. Don’t eat all the gluten-free treats if you’re not following a gluten-free diet. The same applies to other items which may have been prepared for a select few.

how can we be neuroinclusive? Strategy Lead for G how can we be neuroinclusive?

Strategy Lead for Google Global Events, Megan Henshall, talks about designing with neuroinclusion in mind:

🧠 neuro-inclusion needs to be a main ingredient in your experience design recipe because there are a lot of people that are coming to events who are suffering in silence or not coming at all.

🔀 there's a statistic from an organization called EventWell, and 85% of the neurodivergent people that they interviewed have not attended an event because they thought it would be triggering or overwhelming for them, but that's sad. they have every right to be there.

have you ever opted out of an event because it felt unwelcoming?

what is neurodivergence? Strategy Lead for Google what is neurodivergence?

Strategy Lead for Google Global Events, Megan Henshall, shares her definition:

🙂 I wonder if you could share with listeners now your definitions of what that means and how important it is.

🧠 I lean into the ways I've heard it most commonly described by neurodivergent people. neurodivergence really is just cognitive functioning apart from what is considered typical. I sort of refute this idea that there is a typical or a normal but there are expectations and there are social norms. and I think neurodivergence is when it is challenging to adhere to those social norms, even if they're broken.

🔀 that is sort of considered neurodivergence, it's a different way of intaking information, sensory processing but there is no right or wrong. and the idea that there is a right way to think or a right way to socialize or right way to exist in any space cognitively is culturally constructed fiction, fake news. it's not true.

neurodivergence is extremely valid — remaining respectful is the key.
